The other hunters feared Jaren’s death and Yor’s retaliation and scattered before noon. They heard the sound of The Last Word, then the sound of Thorn - and nothing more. As they camped for the night Jaren left to scout ahead then in the darkness the others heard the sound of a shootout, and Shin realized Jaren had left them behind and faced Yor alone to protect them. ![]() When at last they caught their enemy’s trail and closed in on him, Yor killed three of their company and fled. Shin grew into a man under Jaren Ward’s tutelage, his mentor and now his father. When Jaren Ward and his companions returned from his hunt Shin told him all that had happened, and together the five of them resolved to find and end Dredgen Yor.įor years they hunted the wilds of Earth, gathering tales of Dredgen Yor’s cruelty, protecting refugees on the road and gathering fellow hunters who had suffered at his hands. The boy named Shin Malphur sat in the ashes with the remains of his family, terrified, and watched the demon approach but it simply smiled and left him alive. The man’s name was Jaren Ward, and when he and magistrate Loken argued, his revolver had the last word. One day Shin watched a strange man come to Palamon with a little white drone over his shoulder, a man who spoke little and walked without fear, and he faced the cruel magistrate in the town square with his hand near the weapon on his hip. Once upon a time in a town called Palamon a petty and corrupt magistrate reigned, and in that town lived a boy named Shin Malphur. He learned their secrets then, the sword-logic of the Hive’s endless self-asserting war, and that corruption would take root in his heart and blossom into the cruelest threat the Guardians ever faced: Dredgen Yor, “the Eternal Abyss,” Guardian-turned-Guardian-killer, Lightbearer turned to Darkness. The drive for power, for this eternal struggle, led him into the depths of the Hive-infested Moon, where he slew the Hive and took their bones to adorn his handcannon Rose. War was the only constant, fighting his only path, and he needed to be stronger. But he knew Darkness still lurked close at hand.
